World Hepatitis Day

28 July 2024

Every year on July 28, people in many nations celebrate World Hepatitis Day.

Why July 28 ?

Because it is the birthday of Dr Baruch Blumberg, who discovered the hepatitis B virus in 1967 and developed the vaccine 2 years later. He was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1976 for this lifesaving work.

The Hepatology Institute of Lyon joins World Hepatitis Day and contributes to the collective effort to cure patients by supporting research projects on viral hepatitis.

“It is essential to continue to characterize virus-host interactions to uncover novel therapeutic targets for HBV and HDV cure, to design a vaccine against HCV and to better understand how these viruses cause liver cancer.”
