July 9, 2024 marked the official launch of the Lyon comprehensive liver center. In the presence of its founders: Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, Hospices Civils de Lyon, Inserm and Centre Léon Bérard; the ANR (funding agency), the French government (rectorat) and Région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.

Almost a year after the French President announced the selection of the Lyon Hepatology IHU, the founders and teams gathered in the presence of the ANR, the Région Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, the rectorat, the ARS, the Métropole de Lyon, the City of Lyon and the city of Caluire.

Objectives :

This IHU (University Hospital Institute) aims to innovate in order to cure liver diseases and offer precision medicine for all, thanks to:

  • the discovery of curative treatments,
  • early intervention,
  • personalized medicine

which will : 

  • reduce premature morbidity and mortality
  • reduce the impact on years of working life
  • reduce societal and public health costs.

The aim of the teams, which bring together researchers, caregivers, patient associations and companies, is «to develop innovations by pushing back the frontiers of fundamental, translational and clinical research, in order to provide answers to questions concerning liver pathologies, while accelerating the transfer of results to industry », explains Prof. Fabien ZOULIM, IHU Director.

Mrs Emmanuelle Simon (Head of Health and Biotechnologies – DGPIE) and Mrs Giulia Girelli Zubani (Scientific Project Manager – DGPIE) presented the figures of France 2030 and reminded us of the rules and obligations for monitoring the IHU.

François Lacoste, VP Public Health at Institut Mérieux confirmed the importance of setting up such an institute to maintain the region's strong position in research and inovation.

Learned Societies

Bénédicte Vauban (AFEF), Karim Boudjema (ACHBT), Céline Guichon (SFAR), Cyrielle Caussy (EASL on behalf of Aleksander Krag); reiterated their support to the Hepatology IHU and their interest in the creation of such an organization.

Patient associations

Christian Comte, association Phenix greffés digestifs, spoke on behalf of patient associations, confirming their hopes in the creation of a comprehensive liver disease center to optimize patient care.

The IHU launch day ended with a major event for the surgeons, hepatologists, anesthetists and resuscitators: the celebration of the 2,000th liver transplant performed at Croix-Rousse hospital.
