Lyon Hepatology Institute

The Lyon Hepatology Institute (IHL) was created with the mission to meet the current challenges of chronic liver diseases by providing a scientific environment in which basic, translational and clinical research are integrated for the benefit of patients.

Mission/objectives:

  • To coordinate the communication between clinicians and scientists in order to identify unmet medical needs and improve current diagnostic and therapeutic options.
  • To facilitate the exchange of clinical samples and data with the aim to better understand disease biology and identify new clinical markers and therapeutic strategies.
  • To accelerate the transition of innovative scientific developments into clinical evaluation.
  • To provide scientific training for the next generation of physician/scientists aiming to become leaders in the field of hepatology.
  • To improve patient access to scientific information, medical care and individualized therapies in order to achieve a sustainable precision medicine for all.

Our research fields

With liver pathologies on the rise, the Lyon Hepatology Institute works to better detect and combat all diseases affecting this organ.
The institute’s research is structured around 6 axes:

Liver transplantation

Liver transplantation is a complex and potentially life-saving operation that can cure serious liver diseases. Liver transplantation is the only solution in cases of liver failure.

End-stage liver disease

All types of liver disease can develop into advanced pathology, with complications of varying degrees of severity, requiring rapid, specific treatment.

Hepatocellular carcinoma

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death worldwide. The majority of HCCs are associated with chronic liver disease due to chronic viral hepatitis, excessive alcohol consumption or metabolic disease.

Addiction and the liver

Liver diseases linked to addiction (alcohol, drug use) represent a major public health issue. Understanding, treating and developing appropriate treatments requires specific support for these often vulnerable patients.

Liver Metabolism – MASLD

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most widespread chronic liver disease and continues to increase.

Viral Liver Disease

Viral liver diseases are caused by 5 main types of viruses (A, B, C, D and E). Although these viruses all cause liver disease, the severity, course and treatments depend on the virus.
