Training

Education and training programmes

In close collaboration with the Lyon 1 University (UCBL), the institute aims to establish a leading international education and training programme in hepatology research and care.

This innovative and integrated teaching programme devoted to liver diseases and liver transplantation will support the training of students, post-doctoral researchers and health professionals affiliated or not to the institute.

The programme will involve interdisciplinary courses taught by doctors, pharmacists, scientists, engineers and anthropologists with recognised experience in teaching the pathobiology of liver diseases.

Each training programme will involve external experts, patient experts and/or industrial actors on specific topics related to clinical research.

New Masters courses

The institute is developing interdisciplinary master’s courses devoted to liver pathology, covering all the research axes and thus integrating biology, mathematics, bioinformatics, chemistry, engineering and the human and social sciences. These courses will cover: liver physiology, pathophysiology of chronic liver diseases, epidemiology, interaction with other organs, and corresponding therapeutic options. These Master’s courses will be shared with the internationally established UCBL Master’s courses in Public Health, Cancer, Measurement Science in Chemistry and Cellular and Molecular Biology. E-learning tools will be developed to include expert patients and promote collaborative learning.

Double curriculum

The institute is working to create a double-specialisation programme in health sciences (MD-PhD, PharmD-PhD). This double curriculum will be based on several double-specialisation science-health programmes already offered at Université Lyon 1 which include the engineering schools (INSA, Centrale Lyon, CPE) and the faculties of medicine and pharmacy. The recently awarded SHAPE-Med@Lyon programme under the PIA4 ExcellenceS programme will provide double degrees in health and engineering, or health and basic sciences, offering high-level training in computational sciences and robotics to students in the field of health.

Creation of a University Diploma in hepatology

Creation of a University Diploma in Hepatology at Lyon 1 University for doctors (in hepatology and all other disciplines involved in the management of liver diseases), nurses, clinical research associates, doctors of pharmacy and industrial scientists. This postgraduate course will cover all liver diseases: metabolic diseases, cancers, infectious diseases, transplantation, methodological skills and aspects of human and social sciences.

Hepatology Summer School

Creation of an international summer school programme in hepatology enabling students to acquire the latest knowledge in liver pathophysiology. Participants will be drawn from the ARQUS Erasmus consortium and our international network. Specific annual themes will be addressed, ranging from basic science to translational and clinical research, in close collaboration with the French and European liver societies (AFEF, ACHBT and EASL). Practical training, clinical case discussions, collaborative learning and project development will be offered.

Doctoral students network

The institute will set up a student network with all the partner institutions and businesses of the Lyon Institute of Hepatology, in order to exchange information on training content, practices and research. A programme of visiting professors to teach and supervise research for young scientists will be developed. The Institute will also participate in calls for candidates in the EU Horizon and Europe MSCA doctoral networks to attract international students and foster international collaborations.

Training for professionals

Specific training for healthcare professionals involved in primary care will be organised through the ‘city-hospital’ network to improve  identification and referral of patients to the appropriate services (e.g. for asymptomatic cases) in order to improve access to care and patient follow-up. This programme is an opportunity to disseminate information about liver disease and the treatment options available.
