Addiction and the liver

Introduction

Approximately 10% of the world population is exposed to a risk of alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) due to excessive alcohol consumption. This persistent liver injury can eventually lead to progressive fibrosis and cirrhosis, as well as the development of hepatocellular carcinoma. In addition, individuals with ALD may present with acute complications such as alcoholic hepatitis (AAH), in which a rapid diagnosis and severity stratification are key. AAH pathogenesis and severity have been linked to the composition of the gut microbiota and to the translocation of bacterial products and live bacteria from the gut to the portal blood which can reach the liver.

Objectives

The main objectives of this research axis are:

  • Improve the diagnosis and prognostic stratification of patients with AAH.
  • Compare the composition and metabolomics of the gut and liver microbiota in order to study their correlation with disease severity, early mortality, and response to therapy in patients with AAH.
